Special Council Meeting Called
On October 23, 2007, a very special
council meeting will be held. This will be an
historic meeting as the voting delegates of
Buckeye Trails Council cast the final endorsement
vote that will make us Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio. Delegates will be receiving a packet of
information in mid-September that contains
information to prepare them to ratify the merger
agreement and elect the new Board.
Town Hall Meetings
All members are invited to attend a
special Town Hall meeting scheduled for either
September 22 or 23 at 2:30 p.m. at the Urban
Campus. The meetings are being held to answer
questions regarding the merger and prepare
delegates to participate in the vote.
Ready, Set, Go! Girl Scouts of
Western Ohio Cookie Program for 2008
Selling Girl Scout cookies has been
part of our Girl Scout heritage and tradition for
90 years. It is an important part of what
makes Girl Scouts the world's largest organization
dedicated to girls. ABC Bakers was selected
as the Official Girl Scout Cookie Baker for the
merging Girl Scout Cookie Sales of Appleseed
Ridge, Buckeye Trails, Great Rivers, and Maumee
Valley regions. We are all excited about the
opportunities this decision brings and look
forward to partnering with ABC Bakers to create an
outstanding cookie sale for 2008. For more
information on the new Girl Scout Cookie varieties
and ABC Bakers please visit their web
site.
The Cookie Task Group has been
working for several months on details of the sale.
Each member of the group has experience and
expertise in the Girl Scout Cookie Sale and each
council was responsible for selecting its own
members from staff, operational volunteers, and
board members. Selection of ABC as our cookie
supplier for Girl Scouts of Western Ohio was based
on the recommendation of this group comprised of
equal representation from all four merging
councils. A process was developed and implemented
for the selection of the cookie supplier. After
interviewing a team from each baker and reviewing
information presented as to how they would meet
the set criteria, the Cookie Selection Task Group
was excited to recommend to the merging council
CEOs that ABC Baker be the official baker for the
2008 Cookie Sale.
We recognize that selecting a new
cookie baker and creating a unified cookie sale
for all four merging Girl Scout councils will
create variations to each regions sale. When the
merger process first began, the first and foremost
priority was to continue the level of services you
expect for both girls and adults. For that reason,
each region will maintain its current price per
box Appleseed Ridge, Buckeye Trails and Great
Rivers are at $3, and Maumee Valley is at $3.50.
The theme for the 2008
Cookie Program is Ready, Set, Go! Key dates
for the sale are:
• January 11-27 - girls begin taking
orders
• February 16-22 - cookies are
delivered
• February 22 - cookie
cupboards (pantries) open and council sponsored
cookie booths begin
• March 29 - cupboards close
As we continue through the
realignment process more details will follow such
as girl/troop recognitions. Additional information
for the 2008 Girl Scout Cookie Sale will be
available on the new Girl
Scouts of Western Ohio web site, as they
become available. Your continued support for this
very valuable economic literacy and business
skills activity will help Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio change the lives of
girls. | |

Local Girl Scouts Participate in National
Celebration
Girls from Junior
Troop 789 of Centerville Springs traveled to
Washington DC to participate in the National
Sing-Along to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of
Girl Scouts. They are pictured in front of
the stage on the National Mall with Patricia
Diaz-Dennis, the Chairman of Girl Scouts of USA
National Board. She personally gave each girl
from the troop a commemorative patch from GSUSA.
It was a great opportunity for the girls to meet
her! The girls also visited Congressman Mike
Turner's office while in Washington DC. A
representative from his office gave the troop a
tour of the Capitol building. The girls were
especially impressed with all of the Dayton
memorabilia in the Congressman's office!
Intercultural Exchange between Girl Scout
Troops
In 2003, two local Girl Scout troops began
their involvement on a quilting project with two
troops of Native American girls from South
Dakota. They met together in South Dakota and
began creating quilts together. Their quilt has
been completed and is on display in the Textiles
Room at the Urban Campus. Read
the story and see photos…..
Girl Scout Bronze Award Project Benefits
Care House
Beavercreek
North Girl Scout, Elizabeth Herting, recently
earned her Bronze award which is the highest award
that a Junior Girl Scout (grades 4-6) can
earn. In order to earn this award a girl must
complete several pre-requisite badges and
leadership duties. Then they have to devote
15 hours of service to their project. For her
project, Elizabeth chose to donate stuffed animals
to Care House which is Dayton's advocacy center
for child victims of abuse or neglect. Care
House interviews 40-50 children per month and each
child is allowed to choose a stuffed animal from
their "teddy bear wall" after their initial
interview. This means a lot to the
children. With the help of her school (Main
Elementary, Beavercreek) and church (Aley United
Methodist), Elizabeth was able to collect 525
stuffed animals; enough to supply Care House for
nearly a year.
Girl Scouts Parade as Living Art
Girl Scouts participated in the Centerville
Americana Parade on July 4th. The theme for the
parade was Color Our World… Artistic Expression.
The girls created artwork that was displayed on
the float, and then donated to St. Leonard's for
their fall art show. Some girls actually became
‘living art'. They won the Theme Award for their
efforts. See
