EXCITEMENT IS IN THE AIR
Summer Greetings,
I hope you and you family have had a wonderful
summer. I know for sure that the girls that have
attended this year's summer camp and day camps
have had a great time, met new friends and learned
many new things. A special thanks to all the
volunteers and staff that have helped to make this
such a successful year!
In the meantime, I am happy to report that the
new Urban Campus is nearing completion. The
construction crews have been very busy putting in
the windows, drywall and other finishing touches.
The plan is for us to move into the building the
second and third week of October and be ready to
welcome the girls and volunteers to experience the
many things that will be happening this fall.
The By Girls, For Girls committee is
planning an Open House and ribbon cutting ceremony
for Sunday, December 3rd and we hope you will come
and join in the festivities.
I have had the pleasure of taking many people
on a walking "hard hat" tour of the building to
show them the many outstanding features that we
will enjoy. I first share that the building is
"environmentally" friendly (or referred to as
green) which means we have used many recycled
products and renewable resources. The trees that
were harvested from the site have been milled and
the lumber is being used in the building. The
heating and cooling system is a geo-thermal
process that uses ground water for the main source
of heat or cooling. The cedar-look siding is made
of concrete and impregnated with paint which
requires no maintenance and the decking material
is made from recycled plastic milk cartons. The
flooring in the hallways will be covered with a
cork material and there are windows and glass
everywhere to let in natural light.
Some of the unique features include: an indoor
climbing wall, a grass covered roof for roof top
camping and activities, a large screened tree
house, a fire ring and amphitheatre, a permanent
stone bridge for bridging ceremonies, a teaching
kitchen and a fabulous room that will be special
for the girls and they will be selecting the
furnishings for this space. Needless to say,
everyone has been totally impressed and excited
about this new facility.
We have so many people to thank for helping
make this dream become a reality for our Girl
Scouts. I can't wait to share the new Urban Campus
with you and all of the membership. I know you
will be very proud of what Girl Scouts of Buckeye
Trails has accomplished.
