THREE CHEERS FOR THE RED, WHITE &
BLUE
Dear Friends, Girl Scouts has
always held patriotism as one of its highest
ideals of purpose for joining our girl
organization. We believe that it important that we
honor our Country and the principles of democracy
by including the flag ceremony in all official or
ceremonial events. During the summer camp
sessions, every day begins and ends with the
raising and lowering of the flag and the girls
have the opportunity to learn the proper protocol
for this activity.
GSBTC has its very own Color Guard which is
made-up of girls from our troops and represents
every level of scouting. The Color Guard is
often called on by community organizations to
perform the flag ceremony and lead the audience in
the pledge of allegiance. It always brings me
great pride to stand with these special Girl
Scouts, pledge allegiance to our great country and
celebrate all the many freedoms that we enjoy as
Americans.
Please take a moment to remember how fortunate
we are to be American citizens.
Wishing you a safe and happy Independence
Day.

LOCAL GIRL SCOUT cHOSEN tO aTTEND "GETTING
DOWN tO BUSINESS" LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE
Amanda Woollums, Senior Girl Scout Board
Member applied for and was recently selected
to participate in a once in a lifetime
opportunity. We would like to share our
interview with you:
Interviewer: What is the
Leadership
Institute?
Woolums:
The "Get Down to Business" Leadership Institute is
an event designed by Girl Scouts of the USA
offering a selected number of girls from across
the country the opportunity to experience
financial, business-oriented, and entrepreneurial
situations through a week-long comprehensive
program in New
York.
Interviewer:
How were you
selected?
Woolums:
After completing a form including essays,
extracurricular activities, and other information,
I, along with one other young lady from the Girl
Scouts of Buckeye Trails Council were chosen to be
a part of the National selection. Then, I was
selected from that pool of young business-oriented
women.
Interviewer: When
and where does it take
place?
Woolums: The
Leadership Institute is held in New York, allowing
a tour the city, a visit of Wall Street, view a
Broadway play while all expenses (except for
souvenirs) are paid for. I will be departing
Dayton, Ohio on Sunday, July 9, 2006.
Interviewer: What
results would you like to see come from your time
at the
Institute?
Woolums:
I would like to learn more about the business
world--banking--stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
for which I am extremely interested but do not
know as much. I also expect to increase my
marketing skills for my photography business,
Mandi's Moments, so that I will be able to provide
better service for my customers and increase my
customer base. Advertising (marketing) is vital
for business success, but each business is
different. Another item of concern is my
business plan. Because of the fact that next year
(2006-2007) I will be attending both college and
high school, as well as working, volunteering, and
also working on my business, I need to learn how
to manage my time and money so that I will be able
to work everything into a business plan that may
aid in being awarded grant funds in the
future.
Interviewer: What
changes, if any, would you like to see happen
within Girl
Scouting?
Woolums:
Like any organization, I feel there are a few
issues/topics that should be addressed. I would
like the views of Studio 2B to change, I wish that
National would really listen to the younger
delegates rather than "beat around the bush" when
answering questions, and I would also like to
revamp the idea of Girl Scouting. I feel that
National is completing their tasks set before
them to the best of their power, but with
everything, there are topics that some individuals
would like to change.
I am very excited to be selected for an
opportunity like this. I would like to thank Ann
Granger for all of her support through the past
couple of years, along with Lori Campbell for her
assistance with the paperwork.
Note
from Interviewer: Amanda has been preparing
for this opportunity most of her life. From the
age of eight she has had paper routes, lemonade
stands, and sold handmade toys. As she grew older
she became a certified babysitter with CPR skills
and had business cards printed to promote her
business. From there she went to pet sitting and
doing landscaping. She is now working hard at her
photography business, "Mandi's
Moments".
Congratulations, Amanda. You have
worked hard to earn this
honor! |

GIRLS HELPING GIRLS
St. Albert's 2nd grade Brownie Troop 2247 has
collected over $70 worth of pennies to send to
St. Pius 1st grade Brownie Troop 252 in New
Orleans. Their troop's leader, Kim Montgomery,
stated that while their church and school were
not flooded after hurricane Katrina, many of the
girls did lose their homes to the high water.
Kim's co-leader "only had 2 feet of water in her
home" where they usually have their twice
monthly meetings and where they kept their
supplies. "I'm amazed that the outpouring of
generosity of our country still continues". The
pennies collected will help Troop 252 rebuild
their supply bin and to help their leaders
recreate some of the scrapbooks the girls made
last year that were destroyed in the floods.
KOHL'S KIDS WHO CARE YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP
SELECT LOCAL GIRL SCOUT
Lisa Vincent has been selected as the

for the past several years, earning the

Level for 2004 and 2005 and is well on her way
to earning the award for 2006. She received her
Bronze award this year as a result of hard work
involving her favorite volunteer
organization.
Lisa is supported in her efforts by her
family who are active in Scouting.
Congratulations Lisa and good luck!
BROWNIES hAVE fUN wHILE gIVING sERVICE
Brownie Troop 1924 had their first
overnight at the Little House in
Greenville Park on April 27, 2006. This was an
activity the Brownies voted on working toward
while they were selling cookies. During their
overnight they completed a care package to be
sent to U.S. troops in Iraq. Each girl brought
in various requested items such as; lip balm,
envelopes, paper, pens, wipes, ramen noodles and
hand held games. The Greenville VFW helped with
the postage to send the care package.
Good Job, girls!
