ARCHERY - RANGE CERTIFICATION

No previous knowledge of archery is needed!

This National Archery Association course will certify you as an archery instructor for camps and youth programs. Participants will learn how to teach young archers to shoot successfully, how to develop an archery program and how to operate a safe program range. Certification expires three years from date of training. Minimum: 5

AMERICAN RED CROSS SMALL CRAFT SAFETY: CANOEING CERTIFICATION

Includes Basic Water Rescue Certification course which provides individuals with the information and skills needed to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. This training will teach basic safety in, on or around the water that meet several Safety-Wise requirements. However, this completes only part of the Safety-Wise requirements for hotel and backyard swimming pools.

Pre-requisite: Participants must be able to swim 25 yards without a life jacket and pass written and skills tests to be certified.

This Red Cross certification course will cover the following:

Canoe equipment information, requirements and basic paddling strokes.

Entering and exiting canoes from beaches and docks.

Entering and paddling a swamped canoe.

Canoe-over-canoe rescue and entering a canoe from the water.

CREEPY CRAWLY CRITTERS

There are 200 million insects for each human on Earth! Discover the secret lives of these important and under-rated animals. Try out "edible insects"! Explore the wonderful world of worms. Worms are experts at composting. Learn about composting and make your own worm habitat complete with live worms. These are great activities for troops working on Eco-Action, Earth Connections or Plants and Animals. Timely and fun activities that widen the understanding of ecology.

GEOCACHING

Learn how to use a GPS (Global Positioning System) to search for treasure boxes (caches) as large as a 5 gallon bucket and as small as a film canister! Explore a variety of areas of camp and discover the locations of two permanent caches that can be found with GPS units or compasses. Also included will be letterboxing, a direction-oriented hunt that can be done with any age level, in any environment. Capture the excitement and interest of hunting caches wherever your troop goes!

INTRODUCTION TO BACKPACKING

MAKE ROCKS ROCK FOR YOUR TROOP!

Learn activities about rock and mineral ID, Moh’s hardness scale, crystal growing, rock polishing, stone carving and creating gem trees and make earning the Rocks Rock badge fun for your troop. We’ll examine Ohio rock and mineral samples and learn how they are used in everyday products. State and local resources about rocks, minerals and fossils will be provided as well as sources for mineral and rock samples and kits.

NIGHT TRAIN

Climb aboard the "Night Train" for great activities to help your troop explore the night sky and earn the Sky Search badge. Create constellations and craters, build a personal meteorite detector, model the solar system by mass, volume and with toilet paper! Take home an attractive model of the distance between the Earth and Moon and a booklet of star myths and stories. If weather permits we will view the stars with a 12" Dobsonian telescope. Local astronomical resource list will be provided.
