ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - CLIMBING WALL

 

Spend time scaling the 35-foot climbing wall. After completing this activity you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment. Other group members will be there for support and encouragement. Each participant will be fitted with a safety harness and helmet and attached to a dynamic belay system. If you have done the climbing wall before we can add additional challenges to create a different experience for troops. Workshops are approximately 2 hrs. long.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - TEAM INITIATIVES

 

Participate in games and challenges to help build your group’s teamwork, understanding, and respect for each other. Learn how to think through problems and include the entire group in the solution. This is a great way to build community in your group. We customize the program to focus on teamwork, communication, and trust depending on the needs of the group. This program will even travel to you. Workshops are approximately 2 hrs. long.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - GIANTS/FIRECRACKER LADDERS

 

Learn to work together and rely on other people as you team up to reach your goals. The firecracker ladder is a personal goal setting opportunity and will challenge each participant physically and mentally. The Giant’s ladder challenges a team of people to work together to climb a 30’ tall ladder with rungs that are 4.5-6’ apart and will challenge pairs to set goals. Workshops are approximately 2 hours long.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - CRATE CLIMBING

 

Who knew that Milk Crates could be so much fun? See how high you can stack the crates…up to 30 feet high. This is a great challenge for the individual and the group. If you like the climbing wall and ladders you will love stacking and climbing the crates till they all come tumbling down. Each participant will be fitted with a safety harness and helmet and attached to a dynamic belay system.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - LOW ROPES

 

This opportunity is designed to help groups build teamwork, communication, problem solving skills and trust. Groups will advance at the comfort level of the group. Groups can progress into some very intense problem solving activities that require the entire group to work together to accomplish their goals. Challenges include the 3-D spiders web, mountain tops, whale watch, porthole and much more. Workshops are approximately 3 hrs. long.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - HIGH ROPES

 

Although this opportunity is done in a group setting, its primary objective is to challenge individuals, mentally, physically and emotionally. After completing this activity you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment. Other group members will be there for support and encouragement. Participants are fitted with a safety harness and helmet and start with a safety class. Then they will climb the 30 foot climbing wall to reach the high elements. Complete elements like the postmans walk, balance beam, and multi-vine. Then for the really adventurous finale zip down our 350’ zip line back to the ground. Workshops are approximately 3 hrs. long.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - ZIP LINE

 

Each participant will be fitted with a safety harness and helmet and attached to a dynamic belay system. They will then climb a 30 foot pole to the zip platform. Then take the plunge and zip more than 350 feet to the end. This is a great adventure for the thrill seeker. Workshops are approximately 2 hrs. long.

ARCHERY

 

Girls will learn the basics of archery from a certified instructor. During this 2 hour workshop, participants will learn safety rules, proper handling of equipment and shooting techniques. BACKPACKING PART I - INTRODUCTION

 

Participants will learn the basics of backpacking in this fun-filled workshop. Learn about proper equipment, clothing, food, and conditioning, as well as how to pack, adjust, and put on your own backpack, put up a tent, use a camp stove, and how to use a compass. The workshop will include a short hike with the backpacks. Adults wishing to carry a pack also need to pay the registration fee. "Backpacking Part One" is a prerequisite to the Backpacking Part Two – Weekend Workshop. Girls will complete most requirements for the Backpacking Interest Project Patch.

BACKPACKING PART II - WEEKEND WORKSHOP

 

Experience backpacking and all it has to offer by joining us on a backpacking excursion through the wilderness. Girls and adults registering for this program must have completed the Backpacking Introduction workshop. The group will meet at Oak Openings Metro park outside of Toledo for the weekend to backpack up to 15 miles and spend an overnight on the trail. Girls will finish requirements for the Backpacking Interest Project Patch. A good pair of boots/hiking shoes, proper socks, and sleeping bag/bed roll are required. NO JEANS or TENNIS SHOES. Backpacks, stoves, pots, tents, and backpacking food is supplied. Backpacking Part One and Two are prerequisites for Summer Adventure Backpacking Trips.

BRIDGE TO ADULT WORKSHOP

 

This workshop is available to graduating seniors to meet the requirements for the Bridge to Adult pin, which will be presented at the adult recognition event in April.

If the graduating senior would like to receive her pin at the annual Recognition Event and cannot attend a workshop, she needs to write a description of what she did to fulfill the three steps and request that the pin be awarded at the annual Recognition Event. The Bridge to Adult requirements are found at www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_central/insignia/bridging_awards/adult.asp. This information must be submitted to the Girl Scout Center by March 31, 2011.

A graduating senior may also earn and receive the Bridge to Adult pin by doing the three steps in her troop or alone and receive her bridging pin in a troop meeting or service unit meeting after taking part in a Bridging ceremony that she helped plan.

CAMPIN' FEVER

What could be better than taking Troop Camp training at camp with your troop? This learning opportunity will teach both leaders and girls basic outdoor skills including various methods of outdoor cooking, knife safety, fire building, knot tying, Leave No Trace skills, orienteering, and more. Camp staff will supervise campers while trainers review policies and paperwork with leaders. Each troop must follow girl/adult ratio regulations and stay for the entire program to receive credit.

CANOEING & KAYAKING

 

Work on basic canoeing skills with a certified instructor during this workshop. Learn about safety, paddle strokes, and get some canoeing experience. This is a great opportunity for beginning canoeists to gain confidence and experience. This is a 3 hour workshop which requires troop transportation off site. Weather permitting the girls will work on tip tests, so please dress appropriately.

CRUISIN' TO CADETTES

 

This workshop will help bridging Girl Scout Juniors and their leaders through the transition to Girl Scout Cadettes. Girls will explore the Cadette/Senior Interest Project Patches, Journey Books, Silver Award, and many other opportunities for them. While the girls explore these many new opportunities, the leaders can receive the Advisor Training for Girls Ages 11-17. Program fee includes a Journey book. One adult is automatically registered to attend the Age Level Training for Girls 11-17. If you would like additional adults registered, please indicate how many on the registration form.

The word Jamboree is a mixture of the Swahili word Jambo meaning hello and the Aboriginal word Corrobree meaning late night gathering or disturbance. HIKES

 

There is no better place to learn about nature and the outdoors than at camp. Whether it is exploring the woods, investigating a creek, using your senses to discover nature, or experiencing the out of doors at night, you and your troop are sure to learn new and exciting information in these hands on and exciting activities. Troops may choose a Nature Hike, Creek Peek, Sensory Hike, Night Hike, or Wildflower Walk. All hikes are designed to last approximately 2 hours. Troops may choose between day time Nature Hikes or adventuresome Night Hikes.

JUMPIN' TO JUNIORS

Girl Scout Brownies, who are in 3rd grade, preparing to bridge to Junior Girl Scouting can come to Camp Libbey and work on their bridging requirements, all while having fun with Girl Scout Juniors who will serve as their hostesses and teach their classes. Only bridging Brownies are eligible to attend this program. Girls will work on their first Junior badge, "Making It Matter" by learning about polymers, engineering, and acids and bases as well as work toward bridging requirements. Brownie leaders will have the option of attending the Junior Leader training while the girls are going through their classes, if you would like more adults in the training indicate so on your registration form (at least one adult must travel to the classes with the girls). It is not required that girls attend this program in order to bridge to Girl Scout Juniors. Troops that attend this program do NOT complete the activities for the Bridge to Juniors patch. Lunch is included with this opportunity.

JUMPIN' TO JUNIORS HOSTESS TROOP

 

HELP WANTED! Fifth-grade Girl Scout Junior troops are needed to serve as hostesses for the Jumpin’ to Junior Event at Camp Libbey. Volunteers will work on the Junior Aide patch by helping teach hands-on activities to Girl Scout Brownies as they work on the "Making It Matter" badge and by telling them about the great things they can do as Girl Scout Juniors. Hostesses will complete a training with Camp Libbey staff on Friday, and then work at the event on Saturday. Camp will provide breakfast and lunch to the group on Saturday. Hostess troops need to provide appropriate adult ratio.

JR. NATURALISTS

 

What could be better than visiting camp and getting a hands-on experience with mammals, amphibians, reptiles and insects in Camp Libbey’s Environmental Center? Spend time learning what makes each animal special, how their adaptations help them to survive, how they fit into the food chain, and other amazing facts. Then visit Camp’s Green House and work on seed collecting, forestry, and gardening.

MAPLE SUGAR FESTIVAL

 

Native Americans called Maple Syrup "Sweetwater." Come and see how Ohio’s largest crop is harvested as our staff take you through the history of Maple Sugaring. Also, explore the rest of Camp Libbey by visiting our Pioneer classroom with Miss Emily Walker, testing your aim at archery and tomahawk throwing, playing pioneer games, and trying some lassoing while visiting the farm animals. Also, take time to learn, in our newly expanded areas, to make your own butter, Maple candy, rag dolls, bonnets, and candles to take home.

PEACE'N IT ALL TOGETHER PATCH WORKSHOP

 

A program opportunity designed to help girls become peacemakers. Girls will participate in activities that build their conflict resolution and affirmation skills while learning how to contribute to a safe social environment of trust, respect, and affirmation. An alternative to the patch workshop is to obtain a troop kit that includes activities, discussion questions, and a facilitator’s guide so that the program can be completed in six consecutive meetings. Patches are NOT given at the workshop.

PONY PALS TRY-IT

Are you crazy about horses? Pony Pals is for the Girl Scout Brownie who loves horses and wants to learn more about them. Spend your day at Camp Libbey learning about the different breeds of horses, horse equipment and why horses do the things they do. Make a horse craft to take home and top off the day by meeting Camp Libbey’s own miniature horses! Girls will complete the requirements for the Camp Libbey Council’s Own Pony Pals Try-it. This workshop does not include riding, it is a ground clinic only.

POWER UP

 

What happens when friendship becomes a weapon? Girls will learn about bullying or what is better know as relational aggression (RA). This workshop will help girls identify what RA looks like as they learn about social bullying, relational bullying, cyber bullying, and the roles they play in each. They will learn how to be a good friend, to stand up for themselves and others and what to do if they see bullying happening. A must for every girl trying to navigate the maze of junior high school. This workshop lasts approximately 4 ½ hours.

PROGRAM AIDE CORE TRAINING

 

This opportunity is a leadership course for girls who are interested in working with younger girls at program opportunities such as day camps, council events, troop settings or special events. This core training is designed to foster the development of basic leadership skills. Girls will be introduced to "Safety-Wise," work on age appropriate programming and communication skills. Fee includes Program Aide pin and an activity file. Girls will need to bring a sack lunch and beverage.

SCIENCE SLEUTH OVERNIGHT

 

Mad Scientists work on crazy experiments late into the night, and now you will too. Learn about making crystals, make secret messages, find out how detectives use science to catch criminals, see how recycling happens, learn about astronomy, and much more. End the evening with a slumber party and movie. Adults have the option of sleeping in their own cabin, as staff stay with the girls for the night! Wrap up this exciting event with a brunch before you head home the next day. Girls will work on completing the Science Sleuth Badge.

TARGET SPORTS

 

Sign up to try your hand at paint ball sling shots and even tomahawk throwing. Work with trained instructors as you test your skill in these two exciting activities. Target Sports, which includes both paint ball slingshots and tomahawk throwing is approximately a 2 hour class. WORKING IT OUT

Conflict happens when people disagree. In this workshop girls will learn how to handle conflict in a positive way, learn how to be a good listener, how to negotiate, clear the air, and learn how to say what they want in a nice way. Girls will receive the Working It Out Try-it at the end of this opportunity. This workshop will last approximately 2 hours.

TROOP HORSEBACK RIDING CLINICS

 

*For Girl Scout Brownies Age 8 and above at the time of the program. This is a time for your troop to experience horseback riding at Camp Libbey. Your troop will receive a basic introduction to horses and continue with a ring ride or trail riding adventure. All riders must have long pants and boots/shoes with a ½ inch heel. Camp Libbey provides helmets and trained riding staff. Riding clinics last approximately one hour.
