ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - HIGH ROPES

Although this opportunity is done in a group setting, its primary objective is to challenge individuals, mentally, physically and emotionally.  After completing this activity you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment.  Other group members will be there for support and encouragement.  Participants are fitted with a safety harness and helmet and start with a safety class.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION - LOW ROPES

 

This opportunity is designed to help groups build teamwork, communication, problem solving skills and trust.  Groups will advance at the comfort level of the group.  Groups can progress into some very intense problem solving activities that require the entire group to work together to accomplish their goals. Workshops are approximately 3 hrs long.

ALL ACCESS PRESS PASS

All Access Press Pass is an opportunity for girls in grades 6th through 12th to learn all about the world of journalism. Meet industry professionals, learn about article writing for print and the web, explore creative writing, practice the art of interviewing, and explore photojournalism while completing requirements towards the Writing for Real IP. We’ll also discuss the GSWO Chatterbox blog (http://girlscoutsofwesternohiochatterbox.wordpress.com) and how you can be a contributor! Bring a digital camera with any cords/docks for downloading, a laptop (if you have access to one), and a bagged lunch.

CANOEING

Learn basic canoeing skills in the morning on the pond at Camp Whip Poor Will. Then take a 2-hour trip down the scenic Little Miami River in the afternoon. Instructor is American Canoe Association Certified. Wear old closed toed shoes, dress for the weather, bring extra clothes in a dry bag. Bring a sack lunch, water, sun tan lotion/hat. Waiver for minors is required to be signed. *Weather/Water permitting

CERAMICS BADGE

 

Learn how to pour a mold and clean the greenware. You will also work with clay and learn all about the kiln. This is a three week class. Badge is included in the cost.

CHALLENGE DAY

CAMPIN' FEVER

What could be better than getting Troop Camp training at camp with your troop? This learning opportunity will teach both leaders and girls basic outdoor skills including various methods of outdoor cooking, knife safety, fire building, knot tying, Leave No Trace Skills, orienteering, and more. Camp staff will supervise campers while trainers review policies and paperwork with leaders. Each troop must follow girl/adult ratio regulations and stay for the entire program to receive credit.

KIDS ON THE BLOCK

Kids on the Block© is an opportunity for Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies to gain an appreciation, understanding, and respect of persons with disabilities. During the performance, the girls will see three puppet shows, ask the puppets questions about disabilities and participate in activities that simulate disabilities.

KIDS ON THE BLOCK PUPPETEERS

Kids on the Block© enables older girl troops to provide community service by helping Girl Scout Daisies and Brownies learn about people with disabilities.  At puppeteer training, troops will learn puppetry skills that will prepare them for a performance that they will give on February 26, 2011.  Participating in this training and becoming a puppeteer is considered a Program Aide specialization.  The puppeteer training date will be arranged with the troop after registering.

MEMORIAL DAY FLAG CEREMONY

All Girl Scouts are invited to participate in this annual event held at the Dayton National Cemetery, 4100 W. Third Street, Dayton, OH. Girls will participate in the opening ceremony and will join other community members to place flags on more than 28,000 graves of women and men who fought for our freedom. This is a great community service opportunity for your troop while working towards the Wave the Flag Try-It, United We Stand Junior Badge, or American Patriotism IP Award (requirements available at www.girlscouts.org).

PEOPLE OF THE WORLD, RIGHT NEXT DOOR PROGRAM ASSISTANTS

The People of the World Ambassadors enable younger girls to explore the many cultures of people who live right here in the Miami Valley, taste test some international foods, and learn how we can all be a sister to every girl we meet. Girls in grades 6th through 12th who have completed Program Aide Training can attend this training to learn about the activities that they will facilitate on the day of the program. Girls attending this training must commit to assisting at the People of the World, Right Next Door program on 2/12/11.
