New Girl Scout
Journeys!

A journey is traveling from one place to another. In
Girl Scouts a journey helps girls explore a theme
through a series of fun and challenging experiences. It
has a beginning and an end. As girls travel the distance
between the two, they learn and grow. This is especially
true in the Girl Scouts Leadership Journeys! Each
Journey includes between six and eight sessions with a
variety of activities that may be customized to fit the
specific needs and interests of the girls.
Each grade level has its own journey book, along with
How To Guides for leaders, all focusing on the same
theme. The theme of the first Journey series is
Its Your World Change It! We will
highlight one of the grade level journey books each
month, starting with the Girl Scout Daisy Journey.

Questions and
Answers about Girl Scouting
2008 has certainly been a year of transformation in our
council! From our merger into Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio to the new GSUSA Journeys books and Leadership
Experience to Daisies participating in product sales,
there have been many changes. One of the duties of a
trainer is to provide up to date and correct information
to volunteers. During the next few months, you may find
that training participants have many questions because
they are new to Girl Scouting or unsure about the recent
changes. We want and need you to feel comfortable,
knowledgeable and prepared to answer questions. As the
Girl Scout year progresses, you may find common
questions about specific topics at certain times of the
year. The following are examples of questions you may be
asked:
Question: How long
do I have to complete my required trainings?
Answer: Leaders have
six months from the time of appointment to complete Girl
Scout FUNdamentals and the appropriate Age-Level
training. As trainers, we know that the preferred method
to participate in trainings is through a classroom
setting. However, we are also aware that many volunteers
have challenges in trying to fit traditional trainings
into their busy schedules. To meet the time demands of
our volunteers, we offer both of these trainings as
home-studies or on-line trainings.
Question: What are
the new uniform guidelines?
Answer: The National
Board of Directors approved the following new uniform
policy beginning in Fall 2008:
-
Girl Scouts at each
age level will have one official uniform item (e.g.
tunic, vest, and sash) for display of official pins
and awards. This uniform item will be required when
girls participate in ceremonies or officially
represent the Girl Scout Movement.
-
Girl Scouts at the
Daisy and Brownie levels will continue to have full
uniform components available. In addition to the
Girl Scout Daisy tunic, a new blue Girl Scout Daisy
vest will also be available.
-
Girl Scout Juniors and
older program age groups will wear solid white
shirts and khaki pants or skirts with their official
uniform item.
-
The adult uniform will
consist of navy business attire and white top with
an official Girl Scout scarf for women, and a tie
for men, to be worn with membership pins.
Question: What are the new membership grade
levels?
-
Girl Scout Daisy,
Grades K-1
-
Girl Scout Brownie,
Grades 2-3
-
Girl Scout Junior,
Grades 4-5
-
Girl Scout Cadette,
Grades 6-8
-
Girl Scout Senior,
Grades 9-10
-
Girl Scout Ambassador,
Grades 11-12
Question: Why is the name changing from Daisy
Girl Scouts to Girl Scout Daisies, etc.?
Answer: Every age
level is made up of Girl Scouts. By putting Girl Scout
before each of the age levels, it emphasizes that each
girl is a Girl Scout regardless of her age level.

Time to Register
The
new troop year is here! As a council trainer, you must
register as a Girl Scout member each year. This will
ensure you are covered by Girl Scout insurance and will
also guarantee you receive information and mailings from
GSUSA, as well as from the council. Registrations are
due by October 1st. Please e-mail the Adult
Development Manager in your region if you have questions
or need an adult registration form.
Are You Connected?
Service unit meetings are a great way for leaders to
stay informed and get ideas to use with their troops.
But many trainers are not leaders, so how do you stay
connected when you are not active in a service unit?
Below are some simple ways for you to stay informed
about what is happening throughout the council and the
Girl Scout organization:
-
WEBSITE - To
stay informed, check the
Girl Scouts of Western Ohio website. There is
constantly new information and updates on this site,
so make it a habit to check it weekly!
-
FIND A VOLUNTEER IN
YOUR AREA - Even if you do not want to attend
service unit meetings or service unit events it is a
good idea to make sure you know at least one of the
members of the service team in your area. The
service unit manager, training consultant, or
program consultant can help you stay informed and
connected to the organization and the service unit.
-
COMMITTEES -
Serve on a committee for the council. Get involved
in more than just training and find you own unique
way to connect with the Girl Scout organization.
We want everyone to feel
involved, valued, respected, and celebrated, so check
out the many ways you can get connected today.
