Expanding Your Training Horizon

Summer brings a natural break for many Girl Scout trainers.  So now is an ideal time to review your training focus and decide if you want, or perhaps need, to change your training area(s).  As with any  position, paid or volunteer, the need for change or variety eventually emerges.  So grab a glass of ice tea, sit back, put your feet up, and review the past two or three trainings you’ve facilitated.  Ask yourself:

  • Do I have the same excitement and enthusiasm for this training as I did when I first started training it?
  • Have I increased my knowledge base of the training subject?
  • Have I added any new dimensions to this training? (i.e.: ice breakers, energizers, visuals, etc.)
  • What input am I getting from the participants’ evaluations?

Now take a few minutes and jot down answers to the following questions:

  • Are there other trainings I would like to facilitate?
  • What additional training/mentoring do I need prior to facilitating this training?
  • What can I do to increase my knowledge about my current training subjects?
  • Where do I need to make changes to my delivery techniques?

If you find that change is needed, or that you would like to add some training duties, contact your Adult Development Department and make an appointment to discuss new opportunities for the coming troop year!

Questions and Answers about Girl Scouting

Question:

How can I make sure my trainings meet the learning needs of all participants?

Answer

One way to ensure that the learning needs of all participants are met is to use a variety       of training techniques.  People take in information in three ways:

·      Sight (visual learner)

·       Sound (auditory learner)

·       Touch (kinesthetic learner)

Adults often have a preferred way for receiving information that meets their individual needs.   The majority of adults prefer to receive new information by hearing or seeing, but there are others that learn better when movement or physical activities are involved.   Retention of new information is actually higher if the information is received through more than just one sense!   So by using a variety of training techniques that make use of sight, sound and touch, you are ensuring that you meet the needs of all participants as well as increasing the retention of the material for everyone!

Review the list below to help you identify the three learning methods:

Visual Learners: Learn through seeing

  1. Need to see the trainers body language and facial expression

  2. Learn best from visual displays, i.e., newsprint, hand-outs, posters, PowerPoints, etc.

  3. Prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the information.

Auditory Learners:  Learn through listening

  1. Learn best through verbal lectures, discussions, talking things through, listening to others
  2. Benefit from reading aloud and using a tape recorder

Kinesthetic Learners:  Learn through doing, touching, moving

  1. Learn best through hands-on approach, working in groups
  2. May find it hard to sit still for long periods
  3. May be distracted by their need for activity and exploration
