New Girl Scout
Journeys!

A journey is traveling from one place to another. In
Girl Scouts a journey helps girls explore a theme
through a series of fun and challenging experiences. It
has a beginning and an end. As girls travel the distance
between the two, they learn and grow. This is especially
true in the Girl Scouts Leadership Journeys! Each
Journey includes between six and eight sessions with a
variety of activities that may be customized to fit the
specific needs and interests of the girls.
Each grade level has its own journey book, along with
“How To” Guides for leaders, all focusing on the same
theme. The theme of the first Journey series is
“It’s Your World – Change It!” This month
we will highlight the Girl Scout Junior Journey.

Volunteer Recognitions -
Don’t Forget to Nominate!
It’s time once again to nominate Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio volunteers for council-wide and GSUSA awards.
Take a few minutes to think about the many volunteers
that you interact with – fellow trainers, service team
members, leaders and co-leaders, event chairmen,
volunteers serving on task groups, etc. How many
of them go beyond their job descriptions when donating
their time and efforts to Girl Scouting? Award
their dedication by nominating these valuable volunteers
for recognition.
And don’t forget to remind leaders they may be eligible
for earned awards such as the Membership Year Pin,
Volunteer Years of Service Pin, or the Leadership
Development Pin!
Directions and tips for nominating volunteers, along
with descriptions of awards, criteria, and nominations
forms, are available in the Adult Recognitions in Girl
Scouting booklet, available
online.
Please note that all nominations are due by
February 1, 2009 to the regional offices.
Weather
Cancellation Policies
Winter weather will soon be upon us. Remember to
check with your regional Girl Scout office when
inclement weather occurs to see if your training session
has been canceled. The Adult Development staff
will make every effort to contact you as soon as
possible to inform you of any cancellations. It’s
important that registered participants and the training
facility be contacted as soon as possible with any
schedule changes. Please be sure to review the Training
Cancellation Policy for your region to ensure you are
prepared with the information you need in the event of a
weather related cancellation.

Questions and
Answers about Girl Scouting
Question:
Once I complete my training, who keeps track of it?
Answer: Training
rosters are returned to each regional office after the
training for inclusion in the training database.
Training reports are pulled from this database and sent
to the Service Unit Training Consultants on a regular
basis. However, volunteers are encouraged to keep
track of their own training records by maintaining an
individual training record. Training record cards
are available at all trainings.
Question:
Is my troop required to use the
new Girl Scout Journey books?
Answer:
No. Incorporating the Journey resources into your
troop/group program is optional. However, leaders
are strongly encouraged to review the new resources and
introduce them to the girls in their troop. The Journey
books are based on what today’s girls are interested in
and offer excellent opportunities to learn leadership
skills. The Leader Guides provide a road map for
leaders to ensure troop activities are girl-led and
include learning by doing, as well as cooperative
learning. And by following the Journey Books, each
grade level will Discover, Connect and Take Action!
So check them out - girls and their leaders are already
raving about them!
Staying
Safe in Non-Girl Scout Facilities
Many trainers travel around the
council to facilitate trainings in non-Girl Scout
facilities. Below are a few tips to help keep you safe
when you find yourself in an unfamiliar place.
-
Get clear directions to the
location of the training.
-
Do you need a key to unlock and
lock the building?
-
Get clear instructions on how to
lock up and/or set the alarm.
-
Keep all of the volunteers in one
section of the building.
-
Make sure the hallways and
bathrooms are lit when training at night.
-
Ask two volunteers to wait to
leave with you.
-
Always have keys out when going to
your car.
-
Park under a light.
