Great Escape Volunteer Weekend—April 16 - 18, 2010 Camp Whip-Poor-Will, Morrow, Ohio.  The theme for this exciting weekend of learning is Into the Secret Garden.  The committee is currently hard at work planning this event and promises regular updates as the weekend approaches!  Here are a few more workshops to tease your intellect:

  • Stress Management: Feeling Stressed? Learn how to control and manage your stress with guided imagery. Learn how to relax and unwind and teach your troop how important stress management is to a healthy life.

  • Card Making:  Have you always wanted to send your friends and family beautiful handmade cards for birthdays and special occasions? Learn to make one-of-a-kind cards using stamps, paper and your own special touches.  Take what you learn back to your girls.

  • Geocaching: Welcome to the world of “high tech hide and seek.” Learn how to use a GPS to search for treasures at camp. You will also learn how the GPS can be used to motivate girls to explore and discover the outdoors.
Mark your calendars, and let new leaders know about it now for a growing experience in the garden

Journey’s Highlight
It is time for our second month of highlighting the Girl Scout Journeys. This month we will look at the books available for Girl Scout Brownies. For the next few months, each time you receive Council Trainer E-News, another grade level will be covered. This section is designed to provide you with additional knowledge and talking points when promoting them at the trainings you facilitate.

This Month:

Grades 2-3
It’s Your World—Change It!
Brownie Quest
It’s Your Planet—Love It!
WOW! Wonders of Water

  • Both current Girl Scout Brownie Journey program books are designed so that the girls Discover themselves and what makes them unique, Connect with one another while learning how to work together, and Take Action through participation in a service project in their community.

  • These are outcomes from the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

  • Each Girl Scout Brownie Journey series focuses on a community service project.

  • Girl Scout Brownie friends join up with the Brownie ELF to go on adventures and learn about their communities and their planet.

Sample Game for Girl Scout Brownies
Leaders, especially new leaders attending trainings, want to come away with some practical activities or games to use with their girls. Below is an example of an ideal game to do just that!
Communication
This is a fun cooperative learning game that can get your girls working with a partner as a team!

Category: Indoor, quiet
Ages: Brownies and older
Numbers: Teams of two.
Supplies: One envelope per girl that contains different shapes cut out in different colors.  All envelopes should contain identical shapes and colors (i.e., two large yellow circles, two small green triangles, two medium blue squares). Place one of each shape into each envelope, so that team members can make identical pictures.
Directions:  Divide group into teams of two.  Ask the teams to sit down on the floor back-to-back with their envelopes in front of them. Explain that one girl is the “designer”, and one girl is the “copier”.  Have the designer open her envelope and make a design or picture with the shapes. Then have her describe her picture to her partner, so that she can make an identical picture just from following the vocal directions. No one is allowed to look at their partner's pictures!
After the teams have finished using only their voices to pass the information back and forth, they may look and compare their pictures. Allow about 10 minutes for this game.  If time allows, have the designer and copier switch to give each girl the opportunity to design the picture.  Ask the children to be careful to put all the shapes back into the envelopes so that shapes aren’t missing the next time you play this game!
