New Girl Scout
Journeys!

A journey is traveling from one place to another. In
Girl Scouts a journey helps girls explore a theme
through a series of fun and challenging experiences. It
has a beginning and an end. As girls travel the distance
between the two, they learn and grow. This is especially
true in the Girl Scouts Leadership Journeys! Each
Journey includes between six and eight sessions with a
variety of activities that may be customized to fit the
specific needs and interests of the girls.
Each grade level has its own journey book, along with
“How To” Guides for leaders, all focusing on the same
theme. The theme of the first Journey series is
“It’s Your World – Change It!” This month
we will highlight the Girl Scout Senior Journey.

Volunteer Recognitions -
Don’t Forget to Nominate!
It’s time once again to nominate Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio volunteers for council-wide and GSUSA awards.
Take a few minutes to think about the many volunteers
that you interact with – fellow trainers, service team
members, leaders and co-leaders, event chairmen,
volunteers serving on task groups, etc. How many
of them go beyond their job descriptions when donating
their time and efforts to Girl Scouting? Award
their dedication by nominating these valuable volunteers
for recognition.
And don’t forget to remind leaders they may be eligible
for earned awards such as the Membership Year Pin,
Volunteer Years of Service Pin, or the Leadership
Development Pin!
Directions and tips for nominating volunteers, along
with descriptions of awards, criteria, and nominations
forms, are available in the Adult Recognitions in Girl
Scouting booklet, available
online.
Please note that all nominations are due by
February 1, 2009 to the regional offices.

Questions and
Answers about Girl Scouting
Question:
How
can I do quick evaluations during my training to get the
necessary feedback I need to make changes to meet the
needs of participants?
Answer:
There are many tools that can be used to get instant
feedback during a training. The tools listed
below can provide you with an informal evaluation as to
how your training is proceeding.
Graffiti sheets allow trainees to express their feelings
and opinions in an anonymous way. Attach a pad of
“Post-it” notes and pens to the graffiti posters to make
it easy for your participants to give feedback.
1. Bull’s eye: We hit the target
here …..
2. Thermometer: How hot is
this training?
3. Burning Questions: List
any questions concerning the training topic
Freeze Frame
allows you to stop at any time during the presentation
and ask for feedback or reactions:
1. Cardboard STOP sign,
2. Thumbs Up! Thumbs Down!
3. Satisfaction rating in a show
of hands or number of hand claps
The participants body language and the amount of
involvement offers many clues. As you train, make
a list of ways you are sensing that the session is
progressing positively. Listen for responses that
indicate attention and interest. Listen to
questions that may indicate more clarification is needed
on a particular topic.
The
Benefits of Attending Service Unit Meetings
Are you currently attending service unit meetings in
your area? If not, you should! Besides being
a great way to network with new volunteers and share
your wealth of Girl Scout knowledge, you can also
receive a lot of information! Council updates,
volunteer resources and tools from the monthly service
unit roundtables, along with the Girl Scouts of Western
Ohio Take the Lead publication, are distributed
at service unit meetings. Check your service unit
web page for meeting dates and location.
