New Girl Scout
Journeys!

A journey is traveling from one place to another. In
Girl Scouts a journey helps girls explore a theme
through a series of fun and challenging experiences. It
has a beginning and an end. As girls travel the distance
between the two, they learn and grow. This is especially
true in the Girl Scouts Leadership Journeys! Each
Journey includes between six and eight sessions with a
variety of activities that may be customized to fit the
specific needs and interests of the girls.
Each grade level has its own journey book, along with
“How To” Guides for leaders, all focusing on the same
theme. The theme of the first Journey series is
“It’s Your World – Change It!” This month
we will highlight the Girl Scout Brownie Journey.

Investiture /
Rededication Ceremony
Remember how special you felt receiving your Girl Scout
pin for the first time? October is the start of the new
troop year and the perfect time to introduce new leaders
to the magic of an investiture ceremony. And don’t
forget about returning volunteers. It’s important to
take time for a re-dedication ceremony to remind us
why we donate our time and energy to this remarkable
organization! Click

investiture/rededication
ceremony.

Questions and
Answers about Girl Scouting
Your training is going well; everyone is participating
and enthusiastic about their new volunteer position.
Some questions, not related directly to your training
topic, do come up from time to time during your
training, and you place them in the “parking lot”. When
is the best time to answer these questions? Remember, to
an inexperienced volunteer, everything about Girl
Scouting is new. Don’t assume that they know what you
are talking about when you mention some of the things
that “seasoned volunteers” take for granted. Be aware
that in order for them to progress and fully understand
their position and support system, they need the
information as soon as possible. Here are two of the
most common questions from our newest volunteers:
Question: What is a
service unit?
Answer: The service
unit is a dynamic support system that, through diverse
methods and the support of the local community, provides
the Girl Scout program to girls and adults. Your service
unit will contain girls and adults from your
neighborhood and surrounding schools. Within each
service unit, several volunteers are appointed to
“service team positions.” These administrative
volunteers are available to support and assist all
leaders. Monthly leader meetings, called service unit
meetings, are held to distribute important information
about policies, events, and updates. The dates,
locations, and times of these meetings vary, but it is
very important that you or another representative from
your troop attend in order to get timely and accurate
information about local and council-wide events. This is
also a time for leaders to come together to support each
other while sharing and acquiring new ideas for working
with their troop/group.
Question: Will my
troop be able to participate in the fall product sale
and cookie sale?
Answer: Yes! Starting this troop year, all
age levels are able to participate in council-sponsored
money-earning opportunities. These opportunities not
only allow the troop to earn extra funds for activities,
but also teach life skills such as finance,
goal-setting, responsibility, communication, and
socialization. The troop leader and girls participating
must be registered Girl Scouts, and the troop must have
a bank account. Additionally, the parent of every girl
participating must return a signed permission slip to
the leader prior to taking part in the activity.
Remember: Leaders and
girls are on their honor not to start taking orders
before October 30th for the Fall Product Sale and
January 9th for the Cookie Sale!
